In spite of people Rise from the fires like those on Black Wall Street and ignite victory.

In spite of people Swim in poisoned waters like the Flint River and glide with grace

In spite of people Pray in the aisles of bombed churches like 16th Street Baptist and march

In spite of people Survive storms like Katrina and smile wide as the Pontchartrain

In spite of people Break through burial grounds like the Gallows and sing songs

In spite of people Sprout from the muck like Pahokee and grow sweet like cane

In spite of people Escape death traps like Hoop Spur Church and lead revolutions.
